Asturias is a natural paradise, a small piece of greenery that seems to be cut from Ireland or Scotland. It was the only part of the Peninsula that was never conquered by the Muslims and was the starting point of the Reconquista of the Christian Kingdoms. Gijon is a coastal gem, a perfect place to drift around, drink some cider and even enjoy a nice day on the beach. But the region hides many small paradises between sea and mountain; that's because the asturianos are so proud of their land.

A walk around the city centre ending in a visit to the Labour University; Climbing up to the Cimadevilla hill to contemplate the sea and the huge sculpture Elogio al Horizonte (Praise to Horizon); Also you should enjoy the beautiful beach of San Lorenzo. Besides that, if you like to eat and drink well, this city has plenty to offer. Local cider is served everywhere and the food is delicious and hearty. In addition, it's usually cheap. Throughout the evening and into the night, bars and pubs fill the streets of Gijon, lively nightlife is not hard to find.

If you have several days, it's worth spending a day in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, only half an hour away from Gijon by bus. As they can't boast about the sea, people from Oviedo are proud of their city's elegance and magnificent architecture.

Both cities complement each other perfectly in your visit to Asturias, but the region is much more than just cities: you should go to the small villages and the impressive Picos de Europa (Europe Peaks), these are more difficult to reach by public transport but it's a stone's throw away by car.
