KNOW MADRID

Madrid is the centre of Spain and like an Iberian Rome, all roads lead to it. With Arabic origins in the 9th century AD, it has been the country's capital since 1606 and has always attracted people from all over the peninsula and abroad. This has made Madrid a cosmopolitan city, open to everyone whether they visit for a few days or decide to settle here for the rest of their life.

Spain's top intellectuals are used to gathering in the city's many inns, bars and cafes. From Velazquez to Juan Gris, Lorca to Quevedo or Lope de Vega to Amenábar, Madrid has always been a hive of art and ideas.

People tend to gather in the sunny parks and wide streets to celebrate and chat with their neighbours and visitors. Madrid is the gateway to Spain and the perfect place to begin your adventure.

WHAT TO DO?

Madrid has one of the largest cultural offerings in Europe. Within the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza you can admire art in all its beauty. Other more contemporary cultural centres include the Matadero or Casa Encendida, the most cutting-edge choices.

The historical centre leads us from the narrow streets of Barrio de las Letras and Puerta del Sol, full of bars and fine dining, to the famous Gran Via, with cinemas, theatres and a wide variety of shops.

But perhaps the best part of Madrid is its nightlife. Start with some cold cañas (glass of beer) and tapas in one of the many downtown bars before continuing the party in the Malasaña, Chueca, Latina or Huertas districts. End the night in one of the city's nightclubs, usually open until dawn.

If you are an early bird, why not start your day with some fresh churros and a walk around the Retiro Park or the Debod temple?
